Mimbre Inspired Pattern Painting, 2020

Ceramic Solo Online Exhibition, Monterey Museum of Art

The pandemic shutdown provided an opportunity to honor Native American arts and crafts.

Recalling an exquisite Mimbre exhibition (1000- 1130 AD) at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, I made Mimbre inspired black and white death vessels. Instead of punching a hole in the vessel, I painted a symbolic hole. I then blended deliberately decorative concepts from the 1950’s Los Angeles Pattern and Decoration Movement, which I saw at the Museum of Contemporary Art. (MOCA)

In this departure, Mimbre pottery techniques of painted black dots and ovals contrast the simple with the complex, the clear with the obscure, the easily perceived with persistent patience, dark positive space with negative white space, while functional but not for daily use.

Let us remember Indian contributions to the arts, crafts, and culture. Ignoring life on the Reservations, inadequate public health on Native lands during the pandemic continues.
